Guard Cancels are a defensive technique found in both Touhou: Gensokyo Reloaded, being functionally similar to Alpha Counters from the Street Fighter Alpha games.

In Touhou: Gensokyo Reloaded[]

Activated by pressing RQCB A, B, or C during blockstun while having 1000 or more Power, a Guard Cancel will start with a brief superpause before transitioning to a melee attack that knocks an opponent back about half a screen away on hit. Guard Cancels have identical frame data across all characters, containing 6 startup frames, 2 active frames, and 42 recovery frames, as well as 20 startup invulnerability frames that help protect the user against reversals that their opponent may use on reaction to the Guard Cancel's superpause; Guard Cancels also have identical knockback and blockstun across the cast, as well as similar (but not identical) hitboxes, as characters with a taller standing hurtbox typically have a taller Guard Cancel hitbox to compensate.
